Reviews
I've been told this place is a little slice of Italy, but I think the slice has gone a little stale. The atmosphere is definitely Italian enough, but add a touch of dive bar and old carpet, and that's what you should expect.
The Alfredo and homemade pasta were good. But the tomato sauce was pretty mid. We didn't really even eat the spaghetti because it wasn't worth it. The chicken parm was good. Would probably not come again. However, I wouldn't be upset if I had to.
My pasta was soupy, not creamy, the beef was awful. Plates came out cold. the wine glasses were cheap and my white wine was warm. The service was good but I was disappointed with the food.
Excellent quality but plain sauce, okay everything else.
In so many ways everything about this restaurant was good and enjoyable, but nothing also felt new/unique. The main standout was it's high quality execution of just a very basic marinara sauce that I feel beats out all the competition in the area. They did a much better job of pulling the flavor out of the tomatoes or perhaps using higher quality ones, regardless it's the standout thing for me.
Might change this rating up if I find something on the menu that really pops I will be back again because it's close enough and the sauce did impress.
Great family owned Italian restaurant! Terrific people, delicious food, lovely decor. We've been coming here for years, and it feels like family and home cooking! Menu is diverse and reasonably priced. Highly recommend
Our family had a gathering here.
We met for dinner.
A table for 10 of us was set up.
Our server was very nice and attentive, she took care of us and we all enjoyed our meals.
The ambiance was nice, not loud.
Our food was very delicious and was served all at the same time.
The restaurant was clean, and the bathrooms were also clean.
Overall, I would recommend Portofino for a larger gathering as well as for any other occasion.
I ordered the spinach dip as an appetizer, and it was WONDERFUL. The Italian margarita was pretty good, too. The fresh bread was delicious. However, the main courses were disappointing. My Shrimp Fantasia had 5 huge shrimp, which was great, but the menu said it would have a creamy white wine sauce but there was no sauce (I'd believe it if you told me the pasta was cooked in a sauce, but there was nothing sauce-like to speak of on the plate) . The waitress said everything is made fresh daily, but my wife's ravioli was anything but. Maybe it just wasn't for us, but the meal started off stellar but kinda fell flat for us.
I left here extremely disappointed. The apps were amazing, but my waitress Julie left a very bad taste in my mouth. She started chatting with us and we were enjoying it at first until dinner arrived. Dinner was watery, no sauce was sticking to my pasta and I had pointed it out to Julie which she said she would have the cooks remake it for me. She proceeded to talk very loudly and poorly about us in the kitchen, with us right outside the door. The food was brought back the same way, just more sauce added but still extremely watery. No flavor in the food, it all tasted frozen, very bitter. She was also bashing other restaurants we visit, which we’ve never had a bad experience there but they were closed today so that’s the only reason we chose this restaurant to go to today. Avoid this place if you can, poor service and poor quality of food.
My first time dining and I'm already looking forward to returning. Generous and delicious servings, polite and attentive waitstaff, with comfortable and spacious seating. My new favorite in Merrimack!
